The VAFRE e-news

From the President

Dear VAFRE Members,

I recently attended a workshop on social media.  It was very informative and overwhelming.  But it seems that social media is here to stay and will keep morphing, with new sites and new ways for us to reach out and communicate with each other.  In fact, according to Network for Good, 73% of online adults use social networking sites.  And it struck me that social media and development work have a common bond – both are about building relationships.

Social media offers us new ways of thinking, working, socializing, relating and communicating.

For our VAFRE community it is a way to continue a dialogue around our program topics, strengthen communications, and share information with each other about our profession.

VAFRE has a presence on both FaceBook and LinkedIn.  Please like us and/or connect with us on these two sites and join in the conversation.

Happy posting!

Susan Early

Member Q&A:

Anne Hurt,
Assistant Director of Development,
Trinity Episcopal School

Q: What is one skill you rely on to be successful in your fundraising role?

A warm introduction: a smile, firm handshake and direct eye contact. As simple as that.

Q: How has VAFRE contributed to your success?

VAFRE is a wonderful support system as I continue to learn and grow within the field. The diversity of members who have such a wealth of knowledge and experience is invaluable to me. They always are willing to help and provide a listening ear. My current position also was found through a VAFRE job posting. The VAFRE job posting board, along with the website and monthly programs, has been a great resource for me as I continue to develop as a fundraising professional.

Upcoming Programs

Join us on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 for a panel discussion on Young Professional Boards: Starting Up, Avoiding Pitfalls, and Succeeding. Maya Payne Smart (YWCA volunteer), Sarah Matheson (Historic Richmond Foundation staff), and Mike Gray (Massey Cancer Center - Alliance volunteer), panelists. Moderated by VAFRE board member, Tina Egge.

Do you have a young professional board and want to know how to recruit and retain an effective group of skilled volunteers? Is there pressure to create a young professional board but you aren’t sure where to start? Are you not convinced you need one? Join representatives from three area nonprofits to share their experiences and insight. Maya Payne Smart will represent the YWCA, which is in the early stages of founding their first YP board. Sarah Matheson from Historic Richmond Foundation will discuss why they ultimately decided to disband their YP board. And Mike Gray, Massey Alliance board president-elect will share the secrets of a long lasting, highly effective YP board known for great work in the community.

Mark your Calendar for December 2, 2014 when Jean Gasen, Executive Director of the Center for Corporate Education at VCU discusses The Power of the Positive No . This lunch and learn session will focus on the Power of a Positive No – how to say no in a way that reinforces your values and keeps your sanity, while still reaffirming the relationships with those around you who depend on you to say Yes (and No).
