From the President


Dear VAFRE Members,

Thank you for your confidence in electing me to serve President of the VAFRE Board this year.  I am honored and looking forward to working with you during this coming year.  

Thank you for filling out the brief survey that was sent prior to our Board retreat on June 26.  We took your comments to heart as we began planning for this coming year.  The surveys returned gave us good marks for our programs and networking opportunities – with suggestions for improvement.

Thank you the VAFRE Board members for a great retreat.  Your energy was contagious and your ideas almost non-stop!  I look forward to your continued enthusiasm and creativity this coming year as you work to improve VAFRE. 

Building on the strength of last year, here are a few things that came out of the retreat that we will be working on this year: 

  • P3 will continue.  The pilot program was a success for the participants and the leaders.  We are recruiting now for the new P3 class, so check it out and sign up.  The application is available on the website and the deadline is August 1.
  • We will explore ways we can partner with AFP.  This may take the form of joint social events as well as some joint programming opportunities. 
  • The Programs Committee has some new ideas they will be rolling out, including opportunities for small group discussions throughout the year, much like the brown bag lunches during the summer.
  • The Membership Committee is always looking for ways to enhance the VAFRE membership experience, whether you are a new member or have been part of VAFRE for awhile.  Part of what will inform their work will be your answers to the Membership Survey in August, so please complete that when you receive it.
  • The Communications Committee wants to use our communications as a forum to supplement our programs and to share with the membership good news, interesting articles and other relevant information.  Improved use of social media will play a role in their work this year, too.

When the Board was asked at the retreat to define what VAFRE will look like in 2016, the themes of leading, advancing and trend-setting emerged.  With your help, this can happen.  This year offers some exciting opportunities for you to become involved.  Sign up for P3 as a participant or a leader.  Raise your hand and join one of our committeesHave an idea for a program topic?  Please send it in.  And there will be even more opportunities for you throughout the year as the committees unfold their plans, so stay tuned.

Let's Get Social with AFP


Save the date for an informal social with the AFP Central Virginia Chapter on Thursday, July 31st, from 6 to 8 p.m. at VMFA's Best Café. VMFA features Jazz Café on Thursdays with music from the Richmond Jazz Ensemble free of charge. Please join your fellow VAFRE member and our colleagues from AFP for a relaxing evening of good company and good music at one of the nation's premier museums. Guests are welcome - bring your friends and colleagues.

The Professional Partnership Program (P3) is back again to offer VAFRE members the opportunity for small groups (the Partners) to meet a minimum of six times with two highly experienced facilitators (the Leaders) between October and June. 


The Professional Partnership Program will encourage discussion and comment on job-related concerns of greatest interest to each group.  Issues and topics for each session will be solicited in advance and facilitated by the Leaders. Click here for more information on the program.

Join VAFRE at Virginia Union University on August 5th as we welcome Randy Howard, President of 501 Advisors to our Brown Bag Luncheon series as he discusses What the Numbers Mean.


In September, as the kids go back to school VAFRE will go back to our regular monthly luncheons with a discussion of Nonprofit Mergers: Good or Bad for Fund Development? on September 9th. This panel discussion will feature Katherine Whitney, Director at Warren Whitney, Karen Stanley, Executive Director of CARITAS and Nancy Bruni, Chief Development Officer of CARITAS.
