January 2015

The VAFRE e-news

From the President

Dear VAFRE Members,

Happy New Year!  Leaving one year and going to the next is a great time for reflection and that is what the Board just did.  In early January we met for a mid-year review of our goals and tactics from our Board retreat last summer.  Let me just say the Committees are working hard for you – the programs have been and will continue to be strong; the socials have been well-attended and in interesting locations; communications is stronger, too.  Everyone is striving to make your membership in VAFRE meaningful and of value.

Looking ahead to the next few months, expect to see some more great programs, including our national speaker program on March 10, with Chuck Loring.  Chuck’s topic will be around boards and fundraising, so be thinking now about bringing some of your board members to what will be an outstanding presentation.

And in April we will honor two of our own with the Nina Abady Award and the Rising Star Award.  If it’s like last year, the Awards luncheon will be a sell out!  The Awards Selection Committee will be meeting soon, so come February, keep your ears open to hear who has been selected for the 2015 Awards.

Other things the Board is working on include looking into CFRE credits for at least some of our programs, and working more closely with AFP and others who are working to provide educational opportunities for development professionals.

If you are interested in joining in, we welcome you to join a committee or consider nominating yourself or someone else to serve on the 2015-16 VAFRE Board.  Nominations open today.

My thanks to the VAFRE Board for working so hard on behalf of all of us. It is an honor to serve as your President this year.

Susan Early

Member Q&A:

Corey Humphrey,
 Director of Development,
Virginia Mentoring Partnership

Q: What is one skill you rely on to be successful in your fundraising role?

If I have to pick one, it is having a genuine interest in meeting and getting to know new people and maintaining a strong network. I feel fortunate to have developed many relationships in the early part of my career and have carried those into my role at Virginia Mentoring Partnership. I will do what I can to make sure they last a long time.

Q: How has VAFRE contributed to your success?

Being a member of VAFRE has introduced me to many new peers and provided me with a strong group of support in the short time I’ve been a member. Read more...

Upcoming Programs

Join us on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 for What to Do Right When Things Start to Go Wrong: Responding to Ethical Dilemmas in Fundraising with Deborah Barfield Williamson, JD, MPA, the Executive Director of the Southside Health Education Fund.

Fundraising is primarily about cultivating, developing and stewarding relationships with donors. Those relationships may become personal as well as professional. Deborah will address some of the common ethical dilemmas in these dual role relationships as well as some of the other ethical concerns that arise and discuss how best to handle them.

Be sure to mark your calendar for VAFRE’s national speaker workshop with Chuck Loring, CFRE, MBA focusing on intentional board recruitment and how to involve board members in effective fundraising on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 from 8:30 am – 1:00 pm (Registration at 8:30, program 9:00-12:00, box lunch 12:00-1:00) at the University of Richmond Jepson Alumni Center.

It's extremely important for your Board and staff to work together effectively to raise financial support for your organization.  Developing a “fundraising culture” is vital but many still shy away from it.  This workshop will help you learn how to begin the painless process of developing a fundraising culture in your organization!

Topics will include:

  • How great boards profile before recruiting and the critical importance of an Expectation Statement
  • Assessing your “Fundraising Culture”
  • How to get your board to articulate your organization's value to the community
  • How every single willing board member can be a great fundraiser including
    • Donor “Must Haves”
    • The Development Process – Cultivation, Solicitation & Stewardship
    • Periodic fundraising exercises you can do with your board

While individual board members and staff will benefit from this session, having staff and board members from the same organization attend as a team will enhance the experience.
