The VAFRE e-news

From the President

Happy New Year!  I hope that your holiday celebrations were joyous and your end of year fundraising equally so.

The beginning of the year is typically a quiet time on the fundraising front.  Do you have some extra time in your schedule in these coming weeks?  If so, try to build in some time for your professional development.  One particularly valuable experience for me is taking time to live the mission of my organization.  So often these days I find myself working all day in my office or out visiting with our valued donors. These are no doubt important tasks. This week, though, I found myself with a little bit of time, and so I took a few minutes to walk around our school, visiting with some of our amazing students and teachers, getting to see first hand the impact of the gifts that my office helps to cultivate.  It not only refreshed me, but gave me some new perspectives and stories to share as I am out cultivating relationships.

I encourage you to take just a few minutes this week, step away from your desk, computer or device, and visit with the people who, like you, are helping to bring your organization’s mission to life. For me, it was a welcome reminder of why I do what I do. I’m sure it will do the same for you.

Dan Stackhouse

Upcoming Programs

Join us on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 for our luncheon program Professional Community Service with Jamelle Wilson, Dean of the School of Professional and Continuing Studies at the University of Richmond.

Working in the nonprofit sector is a fulfilling experience.  Should we continue our service in the nonprofit community outside of work too?  Dean Wilson will cover why it is important for you and your organization to participate in multiple opportunities in your community on boards, committee or other volunteer service.

Thanks to AMPA Events and Halcyon Management, LLC, for their sponsorship of this meeting.

Mark your calendar for an upcoming VAFRE National Speaker Forum at the University of Richmond Jepson Alumni Center on March 8, 2016 when Karin Cox from Hartsook leads a discussion and workshop about overall nonprofit sustainability and the significant roles leadership, fundraising and other key elements play in the sustainability of an organization.

Participants will learn ideas to strengthen and sustain fundraising to meet the organization’s evolving needs while retaining, growing and diversifying the donor base. They will learn how to share the importance of being financially sustainable as an organization without diminishing the value and fundamental role of donors.   This session will provide “next move” actions steps and “start tomorrow” strategies that will serve as the foundation of a plan while building donor loyalty, engaging fundraising leadership and nurturing an institutional culture of philanthropy.

Check out the details on all of our upcoming meetings on the Events page of our website.
